No-one knows. Since more than 210 planets have been detected orbiting stars within relatively short astronomical distances it appears that planets are common, at least big ones like Jupiter or even bigger.

No small wet rocky planets have been found yet. So such planets may be scarce, but guessing from the bigger ones that have been found, they may be fairly common. In either case, over the whole Universe there are probably billions like the Earth. This could mean millions (or more, or less) with life of some kind on them.

The Earth has been around about 4.5 billion years. For almost the first 3 billion years the only life on it was single celled bacteria or maybe it got as far as algae.

So from that it could be that there are a lot of bacteria out there and not much more. Some planets may have got a lot further, and the smartest things on them might be as clever as a cow. Maybe one in a billion have beings like people on them. It's all guesswork.

The chances of a space-faring extra-terrestrial civilisation arriving at Earth are rather slim unless by some freak chance they happen to be based within several dozen light years.

If there is, we will never know. Even if we picked up radio messages or something now, the people who sent it would be all dead! Space is too big. For instance - to get to the nearest star system to us would take about 20 or more years. Then you have to hope there might be a liveable planet and the nearest one of those is about 50 years away. Then 50 back and again hoping you could exist there!

Space is like the Yahoo Answers, "If you ask a question will someone read it?"

Extraterrestrial! And of course there is other life in the millions of galaxies. To think otherwise would be presumptive and arrogant.

I'd like to think we aren't the only ones in the universe.
