First of all, the artist must have a ton of raw talent, (as opposed to mechanical talent, which we get too much of). During severe emotional episodes, that talent becomes uninhibited; unbridled; uncontrolled & guts out all over the canvas, page or sheet of music and the end result is the truth........Doesn't that happen in relationships sometimes?

Because most things relate to our emotional mind, and if we are very stressed this is a way of escapement and also expressing what is happening to oneself.

When you are in a mood and really angry we get things done much better because this rage is pushing you on, so this is the same with when Artists and thinkers do there best work.
strouse done all his music under stress, but the stress was caused because it had to be finished but this is an example.

Very good question--you get a star!

Some of these artists/thinkers do their best work when truly mentally troubled. Some even do their best work while very messed up on drugs or alcohol.

For some reason, these people's imaginations work better when they are in turmoil--depressed--distressed--stoned, etc. However, it may not be their imaginations (in some people), it could be what they are really seeing or hearing in their troubled minds.

Because a lot of people with mental trauma or illness have higher IQs than average. So when they are at their most creative, ie when the everyday constraints are lifted by their mania (or whatever) they produce their best work.

Pain & strife often stimulate creativity. I really believe that creative people "feel" emotion more intensely than an average person. Creating art is the outlet for them.

Great art is passionate...you can't "create" passion, you have to feel it. And it is usually when we're in a deep emotional state when we emote the most passion, whether it is negative or positive.

Maybe because that work depends on emotions. I'm not that bad at poetry when I'm sad or pumped up, but sucky when I'm bored or something.
