The weather was tough, it was pretty hard to keep everything clean, they often didn't have a lot of food, growing things was difficult, and every now and then there were Indians.

I had to do a senior seminar on the Puritans in college and I read this book:

Albion's Seed by David Hackett - VERY informative on the day to day life of a puritan.

He apparently wrote another book, Bound Away: Virginia and the Westward Movement , which if it is anything like Albion's Seed, you are sure to get some good mucky wheel wagontrain stories.

Lack of food, clothing and shelter--except what they could come up with themselves. Lack of much companionship--have you heard of cabin fever? Lack of challenging activities, such as books or chessboards.
