Many conservatives in England and France also supported Hitler because they saw him as more of a threat to the Soviet Union than to themselves. From the time Hitler came to power until after the Munich agreement, the Soviet Foreign Minister Maxim Litinov tried to form an alliance with the West against Hitler, but he was unsuccesful because conservatives opposed it. After Munich, he was fired and replaced by Molotov, who was much more pro-German in outlook. It was only when Hitler started making demands on Poland that England and France showed a willingness to negotiate with the Soviet Union, but by then the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was nearing completion.

It is true that many Conservatives did initially approve of Hitler. Indeed, that went on right until after the war had started. They was a move by some Conservatives in 1940, when it became clear that Chamberlain could not last as Prime Minister, to back Lord Halifax, rather than Churchill, to replace him. Halifax made it clear that he wanted to try and reach a peace settlement with Hitler.

But appeasement went further than just a liking for Hitler. Remember, politicians in the 1930s still remembered WWI, and many had fought in it. The last thing they wanted was another World War and that is what appeasement was trying to avoid. In many ways, at the time, it was a noble ideal, particularly when people didn't know how totally wicked Hitler and Nazism was.

Even Churchhill thought Hitler had some great ideas early on.

Racism was perfectly accepted at the time, so that wasnt an obstacle. Also the world was in a depression and coming out of WWI. A stronger gov't like that provided by Hitler was a very effective answer that was considered elsewhere. Germany went from having one of the weakest economies to one of the strongest under Hitler.

Chamberlain appeased Hitler because of bad Western intelligence on the strength of Germany's military (particularly the Luftwaffe). The West thought Hitler was much stronger than he actually was.

Hindsight is 20/20, and only after the war was it realized that Britain taken a stand at that point, Germany likely would have been forced to back down.

Most people including Germans were horrified by the prospects of another World War. It is easy to accuse Chamberlain and others of appeasement but the thought of another generation slaughtered in another world war did not appeal to anyone (except Hitler).
The conservative in England felt the Nazis and the fascists were a good bulwark against Communism.

National Socialism (NAZISM) in Germany was a way of Fascism, like Mussolini did in Italy and Franco in Spain.
Fascists are well-seen by Conservatives because they appeal to old traditions and values, ban liberals and free-thinkers. At first they seem to be "friends" because they hate communists and liberals as I previously stated. But then they systematically eliminate all those who do not think like them. That happened in some way with the Spanish men who wanted the Republic instead of Franco´s Dictatorship. Franco used the Church, Hitler used German and Scandinavian mithology, even Wagner´s music and Nietzsche´s books and manifestos. Mussolini acted like that.
Then, as a consequence, conservative politicians from U.S. and U.K. were deceived at first

I disagree with everyone on the board. Chamberlain chose to appease Hitler simply because he had no alternative.
UK went through drastic budget reduction which pared the military force to bare bones. Army was completely unprepared for any kind of major military action, save for low-intensive colonial military actions. At the sametime, so was German Wehrmacht. In 1933, it was only 100,000 strong. Even in 1939, it relied mostly on horse for transporting both artillery and supplies. However, UK was even more awefully unprepared. For this reason, only option available to Chamberlain was to attempt to appease Hitler and buy time. Contrary to widely held belief Hitler and Nazy party was not right wing. They held more similarities with the Left wing parties. However, they were staunchy anti-communist, which would qualify them to be right-wing. Many of the social projects launched by Hitler would be immediately recognized by liberals as socially progressive programs. Projects like building the autobahn and introduction of Volkswagen were designed to stimulate stignant German economy at time.
