Just ask if he's alright and tell him if he needs you, you're there. You don't have to talk, sometimes just being with someone is comfort enough. If he doesn't like for people to say they're sorry, then don't say it. Just be there for him that's probably all he needs right now.

It's very apparent, that your Emotions will come through. If you just approach him and give him the Hug, that he'll desperately need. There's no clear-cut way to handle this? And this may not mean much to you. But I've always, once offering a Hug? Ask them to talk about the person that has just passed away. It sounds painful? But it shows that you have respect for him, His sorrow. While still remembering the Recent passing of his Family Member. Offer my Deepest Sympathies from Atlanta. Your Compassion, will be very Rewarding to all that knew this Person. God Bless You!

Take it from someone who knows, there is absolutely nothing you can say to him that will help. Grief is a personal thing and you should be proud that he thinks of you as a good enough friend that he can offload his thoughts and emotions on to you during this time. When my grandad committed suicide I rang up my best friend and cried and shouted hysterically down the phone. There was nothing I wanted her to say, just being able to talk to someone that wasn't in my family was the most important thing. It helped me a lot when one of my friends reminded me a few months afterwards, when I was still in deep mourning, that death is a natural part of life, the heartache does make you stronger. She was right.

You mentioned the first rule of thumb. Do not say that you are sorry. That is one of the most irritating things that people say and it does not make sense. People say "I am sorry" because they do not know what to say.
Instead, tell him that you are there for him. Tell him that he can talk to you about anything. Let him know that you care. Talk to him about the most mundane things you can. Tell him about the simple activities of your day. Being reminded of the small stuff helps people who are grieving. It helps them get their mind on something easy to think about rather than their pain.
Take care,
Troy

its hard my best friends mum has died of cancer she has been takin it pretty hard they were close.
you have to try and make them feel comfortable around you in thier own time they will come to terms with what has been happening and be there for them whenever they need you just see if theres anything they want to talk about. and don't feel to rejected if they say no people work things out in different ways .
