Well that would depend on your fish. Silver carp have been used to breed and cross breed many types of gold fish for color and heartiness and can jump 10 out of the water.

Depending on your fish's lineage (breeding history) it is a possibility. I have never seen mine jump any higher than a few inches to grab food.

I don't see why if the silver carp can why if your fish has this gene it would be impossiable.

It has been reported in Japan prior to major earthquakes, koi and gold fish have been seen leaping sometimes in excess of 15 feet in search of a deeper pond. (don't know if this is a fact)

UPDATE:
Actually this is true. Many koi pond owners even in California claim their fish have jumped prior to an earthquake. Most ponds are covered with bird nets to keep their fish from jumping. Any Californian koi keepers out there?

With a good swimming start, some could probably "jump" 5 feet horizontally, but, vertically, no. Depending on their size and strength, I would guess they could only jump an inch to maybe a foot.
