What is your opinion of Hemingway?

Question

Where do you think he rank among the best authors of all time and why? Also what is you favorite NOVEL authored by him.

I'm not looking for alternatives! :-) Just answers specific to the question please.

Hemmingway was one of the greatest authors of any geneation. My favorite is the Old man and the sea. He was an interesting fellow, and his excentricities drove him insane and eventually lead to his suicide. He was not gay, in fact he had an overwhelming thirst for women. He is very well known for telling a story under a totally different story. See how the old man and the sea addresses Fidel Castro, and the White Hills addresses Abortion.

I think that every male between the ages of 16 and 25 that reads eventually gets around to Hemingway. I wouldn't rank him as the greatest writer of the 20th century, but he'd be in the top 10...for influence if nothing else. My favorite novel by him is still The Sun Also Rises. Though, I read A Movable Feast about once every 5 years or so. To refer to my first sentence, I'm middle-aged, so the Hemingway bug largely leaves me unbitten, but I devoured him in my 20's. (To the answerer above, Donald Goines was a really great writer, except the whole "Kenyatta" series left me cold because of its inherent racism. Swamp Man is one I highly recommend though)

I wouldn't rank him as #1 but the guy could write. So his personal life was a bit messed up, whose isn't? The best writers have messed up personal lives, that's where they get their stories!

My favourite story by Hemingway is definately "A Clean Well Lighted Place"

The Novel "The Old Man and the Sea" is probably my favorite novel.
