i'm a technical kind of guy...you ask what an ipod is...prepare to be confused.

on the surface..the ipod is mostly known for being a portable music player with hard-disk based storage and an innovative design. the newer ones are able to play back videos and show photos, turning them into portable media units...in which if you look around on the internet..or even in a place like best buy or circuit city...you'll find software packages that make it easy for you to put your dvd's on your ipod..which you can also do if you look around the internet using actual free software.

the ipod has been known for being easy to use...it can be tricky at first.

technically, an ipod is a digital media player based on a PortalPlayer design using a CPU with dual ARM7 cores running at a max of 75 mhz, it features 32MB of ram (64MB on the 60 and 80 gig video models), the actual ipod and ipod mini models used really tiny hard drives to store data...the nano's and shuffles use flash ram. the shuffle is actually in no way related to an ipod hardware wise, being of an entirely different design. the video's contain a dedicated chip to do the video decoding, while the music is decoded in software and piped to a rather nice digital audio converter. it's then amplified for your ears. the click-wheel if you have no clue what it is..might be a tad confusing at first...but it is rather nice after you get used to it.

most people associate an ipod with the software that apple created and comes loaded with every single unit...however, people have written replacement software that makes the ipod really no different than any other player using the same software....so..from a hardware point of view..it's nice..i dislike the apple software...however, i don't know how technical you are...and putting this thing on your hard drive isn't that easy of a task

an ipod is a kind of mp3 player that does not optimize most features and is a poor choice, it is easy to use, but that it because it barely has any features, but then it has firmware and software that sucks, the ipod is a horrid player, but its popular, thats because it has a small size, and it is the only mp3 player that has been in commercials all of the time. If you would like a quality pmp i suggest getting a zen vision m, an archos, or a wolverine mvp, the archos being for a big screen, the zen for its small size, and the wolverine is the best choice because it comes in 120GB, but it is kind of big, so you have to not mind the size.

It's a music player, but it sucks. A Creative Zen Vision:M is what you're looking for.
