it sounds like the backlight went out in it. if you dont have warrenty it will b costly but you can always check on ebay for one. I think when mine went out a few years ago. it goes me like 300 bucks to fix it.

REPLACE THE LAPTOP! this is not only one of the most expencive parts to buy but also expencive to have installed. The part will run anywhere between $150 and $700. The install will cost $100 to $300 to have a tech put it in. For that money yu can replace the laptop with a new one and get mor time and proformence out of it.
SORRY FOR THE BAD NEWS!
REPLACING THE BACKLIGHT ISN'T A GOOD IDEA ON THESE SCREENS! The replacement could cause the rest of the screen to die.

In this case you will not need to replace the entire screen. All you would need is to replace the backlight on it.
They can run anywhere from 20 bucks for a used one to 60 bucks for a new one.
Installation of the backlight will cost you about a hundred.

if you have a current warrenty, call dell at 1 800 999 3355 get tech support and have them check, if you do then the lcd replacement is free. your warrenty may even cover having someone come to your house or business and replace it for you. you have what is called a backlighting problem. if you are not covered by a warrenty, have them transfer you to spare parts and they can tell you the cost.

Thats a good point about the backlight. however, if it turns out to be the screen itself, and you would need to buy a new one....you may be better off buying a new computer, because the price and labor will be high. (depending on your budget)

They're not cheap. I agree with the other user, roughly $200-300.
