There's more to it than just that actually...there's many other components that would be required to be replaced to make that a viable alternative.

But as mentioned before, Honda doesn't make a 6 speed Automatic, 5 speed automatic is so far the most...And even those have given the company quite some headaches because there's an inherit problem with the 5 speeds reliability which has prompted Honda to extend the warranty on that component.

As it is, your car should be somewhat fuel efficient by just having 4 cylinders. And if you perceive you will save much gas by fitting a 6 speed automatic, just imagine the thousands you will spend to allow for that. So when you do the final numbers you'll see, it's not really worth it. Better just to save that money and possibly apply it a new vehicle, maybe something smaller with more fuel efficiency.

Ironically, as I mentioned on another topic... I rented 2 different vehicles, for one common trip I make. One was a Mazda6, 4 cylinder, and the other was a Mustang V6. The V6 Mustang did better fuel efficiency in the highway, over the 4 cylinder Mazda. How is that so? When driving 80-90MPH, the Mazda's 4 cylinders have to work that much harder than the Mustangs V6, revving at around 4000RPM+, while the Mustang cruised at a comfy 2700RPM.

My mileage according to the computer was 18MPG for the Mazda6 4 cylinder, and 23MPG for the Mustang V6.

And I'm guessing this is what your encountering in your highway drives...

Food for thought...hope this helps...

Honda does not make a 6 speed auto for any of its cars, in fact I'm pretty sure they don't make a 5 speed auto or a six speed manual either. Also, a transmission overhaul on a 96 accord would cost at least as much, maybe more than the value of the car.

Spend $2800 to save 12 cents a day on gas? Why not?
