I'm not sure if this is the right answer but I've always believed that the saying "God is love" meant he was the only one who practiced true unconditional love for us when he sent his son to die on the cross for us. He's the only one who knows, practices, and teaches in his word the true meaning of love.

If you understand Englis language well, then you do know what "God is love" means. As I realize that you are the one who asked this question, then I assume you understand...
But if it is the case that you have some kind of psychological problem that makes you not able to understand, then you would not understand any good explanation here. However I think it is now the case.
If you have another thing that do not let you get such meaning, then you recommend you to study semantics at college. There you'll get good information to overcome your case.
So, .... if any of this things is real/possible to you, then here I try to solve your problem: it means that 'love' here means everything on earth that is good itself; God is the good isself; therefore it is why some people relate God and love with a linking verb, which want to say; "the thing X is equal the thing Y", i.e., "God is everything that is good".
Wow, my English is pretty good, is not it?
Sorry for my probably mistakes...

--It means that God is the epitome of love!--Even beyond any human imagination.
--Such love governs his other main attributes of Justice, Power, Wisdom.
--An idea of what are loves boundaries(meaning what it does & does not do) is explained at
(1 Corinthians 13:4-7) “4Â Love is long-suffering and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, does not get puffed up, 5Â does not behave indecently, does not look for its own interests, does not become provoked. It does not keep account of the injury. 6Â It does not rejoice over unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth. 7Â It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

Well, the answer supposes that one must firstly believe in God! I believe in God, I'm not so sure to do His will, but I know that if He is God, also I'd know that His Word and one of His name is 'Eternity'. Eternity is the contrary of death, overall the death of the soul. I don't think we can rich the eternity hating, offending, stealing, and so on! The necessity is to love. If love means eternity that means God, God is love!

Right...Both do not have clear definition, thus unknown. Who truly know what Love is????Who truly know what God is...Honestly....beyond all rigid beliefs? But sound good very good, and feels good..Why don't we take "God is Love' without "meaningful analysis", just as is... our beliefs based on a meanings which we, ourselves created...it just meanings which is flexible to be changed naturally...There is Divine quantities, 'God is Love" Attempt to define it just created trouble for 5000 years. The secret is that God appear to you as you define it...Love appear to you as you define it....in another word, we are humans on earth, experiencing that, which we think we "know", defined, and put meaning on,,,,nightmare.

If God is omnipresent, he is in everything -- birds, flowers, us. Then God's love must be defined as the best of all things. The best of us. The good that we wish to aspire.

It is what it is. God IS Love. In my 2cents as Dalai Lama said: My religion is simple, my religion is kindness.
To me...God is Love. I agree. The "light" that we seek is usually within us. We spend so much time looking for an outside source, that if we just look within. . .that is where God is.

God is the one source of all love. Our love comes from Him and is portrayed in its many forms. Because we are from Him, our love is seperate out of Him and seperate from each other. But in Him, together, we (every soul throughout time) are His love united.
