I got an hp notebook. And im going to go buy memory for it. It has pc2700 333mhz 256. If i mix the 256 infineon ram with a different brand 512 ram. How bad is it? Its slow already with only 256. Just mixing it will it still improve speed. Upgrading ram how much difference would it make. Any improvements? And the brand transcend is it any good? Compare to other brands. There will be no problem with mixing brands of memory for the average user.

The only time you would really want to match brands is if you are planning on messing with the timings and speed of the memory. That would only be for hardcore gamers and system engineers.

It will improve your performance by a large amount. XP runs slower than molasses on 256mb. Increasing it to 768 will be like night and day.

My personal preference for memory stays with these brands Corsair, Mushkin, OCZ, Geil, Crucial, Micron and Supertalent.

You can find Corsair value select for rather cheap at Best buy.

Other than that, Kingston and PNY are ok.

The brand doesn't make that much difference although I would stay away from generic memory.

Transcend is not as famous as some other memory manufacturers and it wouldn't be my first choice if I was going to try to overclock it but it would be fine for your needs.

RAM is definitely the easiest upgrade you can make to noticably improve performance. Still, you don't have a lot of processor power. Even with more RAM you will not have a fast machine.

I've never heard of Transcend memory. But that doesn't mean it is bad ram. The 512MB ram should work alright in you laptop as long as you match the current memory specs. Most newer laptops don't care about the brand of memory. Just be real careful installing it. You might want to check with HP and verify that you laptop will take 768MB or ram. or that it will talk to a 512MB stick, some manufacturer's limit the amount of memory the system can talk to, in order to make the system cheaper to sell.

Upgrading RAM will always increase the speed of your computer. A good place to go, if you haven't already, is;

www.crucial.com

These guys are the Gods of memory and their web site has a system scanner that you can run. It will scan your computer and tell you the configuration options that are best suited for it. This will help you insure that you are getting the right memory for your system. They also sell the RAM at very competitive prices. You should at least check them out before making the purchase.

IT's not bad. Chip size and brand doesn't matter really(although there are some brands better than others) as long as the bus speed for the RAM is the same. It should make quite an improvement especially when multitasking.

Mixing brands of memory wont hurt anything. from the looks of it, it seems you have an older machine. it's not only memory that slows your computer, its also the processor.
