I start a job in Central London in three months. It'll be my first real time away from home (not including Uni when I was home every weekend). Dur to London being such an overwhelming place and the prices being so high I have decided to commute, my upper limit is 1 hour on the train (one way).

Where does this leave me for options? I know Waterloo Station-HoParliament, where I will be working, is walkable, but what about from Paddington? Where would be a good place for me to look in to living (I just want a small flat), no more than 1 hour away on the train- a friend mentioned Reading?

How much is it likely to cost me to get in to London on the train from this distance, and do you by an annual train ticket or something?

Thanks!

The only stations that are walkable from Parliament are Waterloo, Charing Cross and Victoria. London is frighteningly expensive to buy in and no cheaper to rent for the same size of accommodation. If you just rent a room I would go for the nearest place possible to work, possibly look around Lambeth /Clapham. If you are looking to buy, then probably the only places you will be able to afford are in unfashionable areas or a LONG way out. But the further out you go the more your fare will be to get to work. And your upper limit of 0ne hour is restrictive. Possibly try looking in East London (easy transport to Westminster by District/Jubilee lines). Take a look at Stratford then head further east. Alternatively I lived for many years in Dartford, just over the border in Kent and about 40 mins from Charing Cross. I always liked living there, prices are significantly cheaper than other places in SE London, but Dartford enjoys a very good train service.
Buy the longest period season ticket/travelcard that you can afford. The longer the period the bigger the discount. If you move you can cash in any unused time.
Good luck.

Reading will be too far and too expensive, both the travel and accomodation.
As already said East London should be OK. Barking is on the C2C to Fenchurch Street or District Line to Westminster. Stratford has the Jubilee line to Waterloo and Westminster.
Get a paper such as Loot which is full of rooms and flats to rent. See where you can afford to live then spend as much time around the area as possible before you put down a deposit. Only you can really say if an area is for you

Some of the prices in the commuter belt are as high as London prices when you add in train fares. I think maybe you should go for a house share in London with people your own age. It'll help you to make friends and share costs. Best of luck anyway.

It will cost you too much on those bloody trains and tubes.
You could try coaches, they are cheaper.
