I think it ought to be outlawed. I have suffered through countless meetings in cigar and cigarette smoke laden rooms for years before the dangers of smoking were realized. As a result, I have developed a super sensitivity to smoke. I know that it is a person's right to smoke, but I have a right not to breathe their pollution. The solution is simple - if they see a need to smoke, let them do it in a controlled area away from innocent bystanders like me. If more cities would adopt a smoke free ruling in public places like Arlington, Texas, we non-smokers would have a cleaner world. In the past, the smoker had the unbridled ability to smoke anywhere - it is high time that non-smokers close the loop on these typically inconsiderate folk. I am for fresh air - if I want smoke, I'll haul out my grill and smoke some steaks.

In an open air enviroment go right ahead, with the following exceptions:
There should be no smoking in "enclosed" open air areas where there is a large congregation of people, like stadiums.
There should be no smoking anywhere where there are alot of children, like children's festivals or playgrounds or on school property.
There should be no smoking within 10 feet of entrance ways of public buildings.
There should be no smoking near busstops or bus shelters.
Any enclosed public area there should be no smoking.
And to those of you who say it stinks, the smell is not what gives you cancer, merely smelling someones cigarette does not mean you have inhaled any pertinent amount of carcinogens...and for that matter, then lets ban any cars near where I am, or factories, or heated housing, OR peanuts!!! How many people are deadly allergic to peanuts nowadays....no peanuts in any public place!!!
And if the mere smell is putting you off, then...lets ban perfume, cologne, hairspray, air fresheners, garlic and onions in all public places and make it illegal to not wear deodorant and you can tell on your neighbors or co-workers for violating the mandatory shower a day policy.
I am a smoker and always always respect the rights of others, but please respect mine too.

In outside public places - OK....I have no objection to "smoking" and "non-smoking" sections in ball parks, restaurants, etc....
However, smoking is a legal activity and generates some billion dollars in taxes every year. Until they make tobacco a controlled substance, they need to lay off the smokers.
They pay their taxes on the cigarettes and they should be able to smoke outside....
With all the crap in the air and in our food and water, 2nd hand smoke sure shouldn't be the priority......

It is my choice not to smoke but when someone smokes in a public place around me they just took my choice away. If they must smoke they should move away from other people.

The owners of public establishments should have the right to set the rules of conduct in their establishments despite their service to the public as a whole. Government can also enjoy that prerogative in government buildings. Prohibition seeks to make criminal that which is not. Abe Lincoln

I think it should be totally free. Not just to smoking cigarettes, but whatever you have. If a person is smoking a cigarette while I'm eating I should be able smoke pot or bust out the crack pipe. Really I should be able to light my table on fire and waft the smoke over in his or her direction. Then get karosene in my mouth and shoot fire balls at fellow patrons.

It should absolutely be banned!
Since I frequent Public Places and inhale their stale sick nicotine smoke I too am subject to Lung cancer which I object to!
I am a non-smoker after smoking for 42 years and my tax dollars should not have to be spent to pay for their mistakes when they are receiving hospital care, etc when they are dying from lung cancer which they caused themselves!
