Everybody so far is wrong. Hibernation uses no power. Standby uses low power. The following detail is from system help on power options.

The hibernate feature saves everything in memory on disk, turns off your monitor and hard disk, and then turns off your computer. When you restart your computer, your desktop is restored exactly as you left it. It takes longer to bring your computer out of hibernation than out of standby.

While on standby, your entire computer switches to a low-power state where devices, such as the monitor and hard disks, turn off and your computer uses less power. When you want to use the computer again, it comes out of standby quickly, and your desktop is restored exactly as you left it. Because Standby does not save your desktop state to disk, a power failure while on Standby can cause you to lose unsaved information.

Hibernating a laptop does save power. but If you are going to be away for the laptop for a extended lenght of time, TURN IT OFF!. While hibernationg is okay for a while the laptop is still having a small amount of power run through it to keep it "on" this isn't good. Eventually you will come back to a hibernating laptop and it wont wake back up. You are better to shut it off and wait the 1.5 minutes for it to boot into windows and be ready to use, rather then use hibernate and cause future hardware issues.

On a full battery you should be able to hibernate for more then two week.
You might find out that powering off-on using about the same amount of battery as hibernate does in 12 hours.
Also make sure you turn off the wireless (if you have a switch on the laptop) when in hibernate.

My suggesting is if you use your computer daily, run the hibernate.

Of course your mileage may very.

If your laptop is on, it will consume energy. What hibernating does is save an image of your computer before hibernation onto your hard drive so that when you come out of hibernation, your computer will load quicker.

If you are on your laptop frequently, I suggest to leave it on most of the time. If you are not always on your laptop, it would be better to shut it down.

Hibernation does consume energy. If you leave it hibernating, it will eventually drain all the battery and do a shut down. So if you are "shutting down" for good, there is no point in hibernating. Do a Shut Down.

Hibernating consumes the fewest amount of resources to keep the computer running, without shutting it down. It doesn't really make sense to have it hibernate permanently though . . .
