Alcohol is often classified as a sedative and shares some properties with other drugs that have sedative-like properties, like the barbituates and the benzodiazapines. Alcohol, the barbituates and the benzodiazapines all work primarily through activation of GABA receptors. However, alcohol is metabolized differently from barbituates and benzodiazapines.

Alcohol is a depressant, which is a type of drug. There aren't any scientific names for alcohol, their are slang terms, like booze, hooch, and hard stuff.

It is also called ETOH, for ethyl alcohol. An alcoholic would be said to be ETOH dependent.
