Depends on what you like:
Beauty by Robin McKinley. Sunshine is good, too.
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan
A Drowned Maiden's Hair by Laura Amy Schlitz
River Secrets (or anything) by Shannon Hale
The Book of Everything by Guus Kuijer
The Book Thief by Zuzak (sp?)
Fast Food Nation by Schlosser
Another Shore by Nancy Bond
As an older teen, you can probably read just about anything. Most teen novels have some sort of "problem" -- anorexia, drugs, bad boyfriends, bad parents, etc. If you want good stories with less melodrama, try some books written for adults.
John Grisham -- legal thrillers
Nevada Barr -- mysteries whose main character is a national park ranger, so they are set in the parks (read in order)
The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie King (don't let the description deter you -- it's fabulous)
Anything by Daphne DuMaurier, but especially Rebecca. She is the queen of gothic fiction.
Clive Cussler's books are very action oriented, like James Bond
How about some classics? Not all are dry, difficult and scholarly. Plus you'll have the advantage of already having read them when they are assigned in the future, or you'll just sound smart.
Gone With the Wind
To Kill a Mockingbird
Fahrenheit 451
1984
Animal Farm
Pride and Prejudice
Emma
Other books I liked as a teen:
Cold Comfort Farm
I Capture the Castle
The Fountainhead
Atlas Shrugged
John Jakes' historical fiction
The Handmaid's Tale
The Color of Water
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Stranger in a Strange Land
Ask your local librarian. They are usually excellent at recommending books based on a few that you have liked.

Here are some books my students have read, loved, and recommended; most have film adaptations, too:
Thumbsucker, Walter Kirn
The Awakening, Kate Chopin
The Notebook, Nicholas Sparks
Plainsong, Kent Haruf
Harry Potter series
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
Shopaholic series, Sophie Kinsella
And if the girl really likes books by Jane Austen, et al, Georgette Heyer, who wrote regency romances, is also quite good.

(2 Timothy 3:16-17) All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.
