well you need both , the router has to be broadcasting a wireless signal , and your PC has to have a wireless receiver
if your daughter already has a router that sends out a wireless signal just buy a usb wireless receiver and install

Least expensive and easiest way would be an Ethernet hub. It would also be more secure. You can use something like the netgear wireless hub, but you may need more help hooking it up and getting it working. I don't like the usb type of adapter as they seem to be slower. If you go wireless, install an adapter that fits into the back side of you motherboard. The biggest drawback to the Ethernet hub is you will will have to run an Ethernet cable through the house, but if her computer is near yours vertically you shouldn't have an eyesore.

You will need a wireless router and an wireless usb card.

Wireless router will serve internet to your computers in your house. Your computer will need a wireless usb card so it can pick up the wireless signal from the wireless router.

Good luck shopping for them.

USB routers in general are CHEAP....like $2-20 and you can even buy them used on ebay. We have one in our home and love it.

If you go for the Wired version, you would just need a lot of wire to get it downstairs.
