One that sizes dynamically is best. Meaning it will adjust appropriately based on the display resolution. I don't know how it's done but my website does it, it just started doing it with the new theme my friend made for me. I'm no coder so I don't know. But, the best static size to go with is probably 1024.

A few years back, it was 800 pixels wide, but these days, most websites are made for 1024 pixels wide. If you aim for either one of these, you should be fine. I'd say if you're trying for something more modern looking, go with the 1024.

800. While 1024 is rapidly becoming the most common, 800 is still the number one (or was a month or two ago). Plus people usually will not complain if the page is smaller then their screen, but will if it is larger and they have to scroll.
