My daughter is in the 2nd grade and she has to do a report, flag, paperdoll dressed in the countrys tradional garb etc.. Well, I traced out ancestors and found they came from Liverpool, England. The question is why did they come? I have no idea. Dont people come to America with the hopes of a better life? I'm not trying to offend anyone, I just dont know the answer. Can someone help me? And why is the teacher giving my 8 year old a project she cant understand so I have to do it. Thanks in advance. And please no smart mouth answers.

When did they come from Liverpool? If it was in the early 1600's, it may have been for religious freedom--otherwise, it may have been for economic reasons, like you said, to get a better life. Some people came for the sheer excitement of it. Probably, she'd be safe to say in the hopes of a better life. And, why teachers give assignments, that's their problem (and yours, if its your kid's teacher): maybe they don't think it through, maybe they think it will be fun for the kids & parents to have to do it together, maybe they think they will learn something.

All our ancestors came here for one reason or another. Some thought they could have a better life, some came because they had to, others came with family and lost them on the trip over. Knowing about our ancestors makes a person feel connected to our past, not just our future. I agree that 8 years old is young for a project like this, but maybe the teacher thought it would be a great FAMILY project. Good Luck!

I think it would make a fascinating report to say that she has NO idea why her ancestors came, but that here are some theories:
1) they came in between the years xxxx and xxxx, and here is what was gong on in England at the time (religious intolerance, famine, plague, whatever, but something bad)
2) A love interest
3) adventure

In other words, turn the uncertainty into a really fun journey into possibilities!

You are correct, many people immigrated to the "New world" for a better life. But in most cases if you were not wealthy, then life was not much better. If you have any other specific information, such as when your ancestors left England I would be happy to add more.
