It is very challenging, rewarding, and interesting work. There are a variety of library environments ranging from corporate to academic to public and many areas in between! I've been working in libraries for over a decade and even earned my master's degree in library & information science. unfortunately, a lot of companies do not realize the value of a professional librarian and the library until they eliminate the position and have a paraprofessional with no previous experience run the show. Or whenever the administration slashes the budget of the community college b/c they assume "everything is on the internet..."

I don't want to discourage you, but i want you to be aware of the obstacles we idealistic librarians face. To learn more about our profession, I encourage you to visit the American Library Association and the Special Libraries Association websites:

Best wishes to you on your endeavors...

I am a librarian. I started out in the corporate arena and made great money, however, I worked lots of hours and sometimes was called to do research projects on the weekend. After years of that I became the Director of a three branch rural library system. I love it. I answer to a Board of Trustees that meets once a month and manage ten employees. It is a very rewarding field and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys research and reading as well as some administrative work. (Budgets and Human Resources).
Good Luck.

I used to love working as a librarian when I was in school. It was a great job! I love books and reading as well, and spent most of my time behind a desk quietly reading, but there were times and days when I was stretched to the limit as well finding things for people, tracking down overdue books and more.

I havent thought about this for a long time... It brings back great memories for me...

Personally I think it is an awesome job. You are the perfect candidate if research, reading, sharing and a quiet environment is in your list of hobbies.
