How to use a usb mouse with an IBM T23 thinkpad?

I just got an IBM thinkpad T23 and cannot get my USB mouse to work. I had an HP and there was a button to "turn off mouse pad" on the laptop in order to use an external mouse, but I can't find a similar button. The devices are all working properly, the mouse has power, any ideas?

Is it wireless?

If it is you have to hit the little button on the bottom of the mouse to connect it to the reciever
