We have a 3 daughters, the youngest is 7 months old and we named her Lily. We are planning on trying for a boy starting in January. Anyway I've decided if we picked out a boys name before we started trying and were really positive, we'd have a better chance of conceiving a boy. Well, that along with timing conception. My husband laughed at me and said I was setting myself up for dissapointment. Do you think I'm being silly? But when I asked him what he thought of the name Alexander he got defensive and said, I thought we already agreed to name our son William. My main question is, how confusing is it going to be to have a Lily and a William (who will probably be called Willy or Billy). Is the confusion a good enough reason not to use the name? He wants to use William, because it was his Grandfather's and Great-Grandfather's name...but he never met either of them. I do like the name, I'm just confused about it all. And the name is becoming so popular again.

Thank you Ash Vass! At first I was very offended by your comment, thinking that you were just being rude. But I do take my 3 beautiful daughters for granted and so many other blessings I have in life...because I am over obsessed with planning for the future. It bugs my husband too. All I can say is it's just the way I am, my personality type, and the way I was raised (I'm just like my mom). But I agree with you and coming from your point-of-view, as someone that wants a child and doesn't have one yet. That I am not being grateful. At the same time I've never been in your position, I've only been in mine. So even though I am usually on here when my girls are napping, or eating, or playing with each other. And I don't feel like I need to be constantly hovering over them or babying them. Maybe I do need to stop focusing on what I want, and think about what I already have. Thanks for that insight!

I don't know about the conception thing...but I have heard that if you try to conceive so that the child will be born in the Spring/Summer months, you have a better chance of having a boy. I think William is an absolutely beautiful name and if you are worried about the Lily/Billy thing (I would not nick name a boy of today Willy) you could call him Will or Liam.

If you were to have a boy, I think WIlliam would be fine. I don't think willy/billy and Lily sound funny together. I personally think Willy/Billy sounds funny all by itself! My Dad's name is William. He died 2 years ago. We are thinking of naming our first son William after my Dad. If we did, we would call him Will, not willy or billy.

I think the family heritage behind the name is really all you need. William would not be my first choice as a name, but considering that it was his grandfather, and great grandfathers name makes it special. Names with a special meaning mean more than the hip name of the year!

Good Luck!

It may be a little confusing when you're calling out for Lily or Willy :0) but it is a great name...William Alexander sounds nice together, perhaps you and your husband could compromise? If you do name your son William Alexander you could always call him Alex to lessen the confusion.

I would use William as a middle name. I do think it will be confusing and sort of silly to have a Lily and a Willy (Billy).
Or, if you want to use William, use the nickname Wills. That was Prince William's nickname and I think it is very cool.

I can't see many people calling him Willy for short. I can see Billy or Bill or Will. So the chances are good it'll be ok! Billy and Lily sounds cute. It might drive them crazy when they're older though! Then little Willy might force everyone to call him Bill or William, but that's ok. Aren't the rugrats named Will and Lil???

Hehe, I understand you're wanting to be superstious, Why don't you use William as a middle name and just explain to him that Willy and Lilly will be too confusing. Alexander William is a very strong name

I love the name William. It's my fathers name and my nephew's middle name...and if I have a boy his middle name will be William too...but then again I think Alexander is a wonderful name too...I have always liked it.

I wouldn't worry about William and Lily..what about calling him Will or William?? You don't have to shorten it...my husband's name is Lucas and he goes by Lucas...he never refers to himself as Luke...you could just always call him William.

Good luck!

I would believe that it is important to continue the tradition of your husband's family by naming your son William. As a compromise, I would suggest the name Alexander as a middle name, thus producing: William Alexander.

In addition, if you don't want to use the nickname Will, you could call him by his middle name, Alex.

I don't think it's confusing at all. If you don't want to give the name William because it's too popular don't give Alexander because it's much more popular now.
