Yes green patina can be so thick it hides the image. Soaking in olive oil is the safest way, but it may take a long time like months. A quick way to do it, but the coin can be damaged, it may be anyway since you said it had thick crust, is to boil the coins in a solution of white vinegar and water. Try 1/4 vinegar to 3/4 water first. You may have to use more vinegar. After the crud comes off, put the coins in a mixture of baking soda and water for at least an hour. Rinse and pat dry. Now some of the coins may be so worn, that the image is gone anyway. There is no way to get it back.

Often people that collect old coins do not want them cleaned.

Your coins may be corroded to the point where they no longer have an image. Sometimes the corrosion makes it hard to tell what's coin that's been eaten away and what's dirt, if you've soaked them and given them a once over with the toothbrush you've likely removed the dirt.

If you have a coin shop close by, they might be able to tell you what you have. I'm surprised constantly by what little detail an avid coin collector can identify a coin with.

Good luck :)
