I don't know about the UK, but in the U.S. it's perfectly legal--an employer is considered to have the right to protect their workplace. It would probably be questionable if they bugged the bathroom, and it would certainly be illegal to use private, protected information against employees (i.e., if they fired a woman who they overhead through a bug was pregnant), but in general, a company can bug, with or without notice. They can also read all email and even run screen-scrapers to determine exactly what an employee is doing on their technology at any time. They are usually prohibited, however, from searching private things, like lockers, purses, etc.

Nothing illegal about it - they hired you, and you agree to work there, though they should tell you about it.
I would find out if they have one by getting together with someone you work with outside of work and putting together a script to make them think something's going on - make it to where they will attempt to nail one of you for something that they have overheard, but make it to where there is no actual wrongdoing, and you can show that it was all a setup to make them admit they are recording you.
If nothing happens, then you can be pretty sure they aren't listening.
You always have the option of quitting.

Nothing illegal about it. He probably has it there so he can hear if someone is committing a robbery not to pry into your personal conversations.
