Alive and dead. The hair root together with hair follicle are alive. Hair shaft is dead.
hair root is the bulbous part of the hair, embedded in the skin. It is inside a sac named hair follicle. Cell growth and transition is carried out in this part, therefore recieves a blood supply. The living cells are gradully die and compressed into the hair shaft. That's how hair grows.

Hair is dead because....
Your hair grows from follicles within the skin. The part of the hair inside the follicle (below the skin's surface) is known as the hair root, while the portion you see protruding from the head is the hair shaft. At the base of the hair root is the hair bulb where nutrients are received and new cells are formed.

Dead......the follicle is alive...The living part of the hair is bottom part of the stocking surrounding the papilla called the bulb.

dead.....that's why it doesn't hurt when you cut it. Same as fingernails. Well if it is dead, how does it grow? The folicle INSIDE your body is 'alive', and it pushes out from there, which is why is hurts to PLUCK a hair, but not cut it!

thats the first time i have ever known that question to have been asked.
you must be in school, your teacher should be sacked!! or deported!! LOL
the hair is not alive, although mine sometimes is after a night out!! it goes crazy after clubbing....LOL
your hair is just a way for your body to get rid of waste, like your nails, just your bodys way of getting rid of crap!!
