The worst part is under the Hate Crimes act, only white crimes against minorities are punished, if it is the other way around it is let off, even if it is just as racist in cause. But remember, the prisons are lacking in black population. A statistic showed 25% of all black males will spend time in prison during their 20s. Whatever we are doing isn't working.

If you are talking about in the US and you may not be based on your spelling of color/colour, you are probably in correct in stating "government". Citizen groups lobbied for years to have hate crimes implemented and its important in a multi-racial/cultural society that crimes are not committed against people because of race hatred. The goverment did not impose this standard, society demanded it. Is it worse? Yes, it is. Murder that is spontaneous or a crime of passion, a crime of the moment is different than someone hating a group and killing someone based on a lifetime of hatred. Killing based on race/cultural hatred impacts the quality of everyone's life not just the murder victim. Hate is one of the most despicable human emotions and one that we need to put behind us. If a member of my neighborhood is killed during a robbery or being at the wrong place at the wrong time that is very much different than if they are murdered by someone who killed them, exterminated them because of some long held, unacceptable hate. Hate murders are about discounting a person's right to life. In today's world hate crimes are often seen as white on some other group crime but in fact in the US there are many, many black on white, black of Asian, straight on gay crimes and society does place a different emphasis on those crimes. Many of the organized hate groups are white dominated or white only organizations. The world did not tolerate the Nazis, and we will not tolerate the haters of today either.

I couldn't agree more. Murder is murder, whatever the reason. In the eyes of the PC brigade, however, you have committed two offences. Hating them, and then killing them. As the sentence is doubled, the hating part is considered as bad as the killing part. This sort of thinking actually keeps racial thinking alive and kicking, and, is in itself, racial. Why don't they grade the motives for other murders?

The government is attempting to stamp out violent crimes due to racial prejudice and therefore labeling them hate crimes. Offenses of this nature carry a double sentence up to and including murder.

a majority of the time, yes. a hate crime is what a racist crime is called and that could make time in prison longer. some people are just charged for racism, so combine hate crimes and murder and you got yourself a long sentence, a majority of the time; unless you have a crappy judge and jury

I agree with you and cannot understand why the law and the media make more of a murder if it involves ethnic minorities. Life is precious whatever your colour and so there should be no differences.

If a murder is racially motivated, it is considered a hate-crime. For that reason alone, it carries a harsher penalty.

It's called a hate crime. Apparently you're a worse person if you hate someone because of the color of their skin or their sexual orientation than if you just hate them because they slept with your wife or didn't pay for their drugs.
