The absolute BEST beginner reptile in my eyes.. for someone who wants low-maintenance, easy care, and little mess.. is a Crested Gecko.

Their only needs are fresh water that needs to be treated with ReptiSafe
food - if you don't want to mess with crickets they can be fed a daily diet of Crested Gecko Diet by T-Rex Sandfire
with an occasional treat of tropical fruit baby foods. + the addition of some vitamins and calcium supplment
Heating needs are minimal as long as the room they stay in doesn't dip below 66 degrees.

They can become very hand tame, even for younger children 8+

You will need to invest in a bigger tank though, at least a 10 gal. 20 tall is ideal though.

If you are dead set on a 5 gallon
the only reptile thats small enough to comfortably fit in there is either a dart frog (which requires special care and are spendy)
or something like a Viper Gecko or Helmeted Gecko(tend to be spendy) both would require the addition of heat sources, live crickets with the same vitamin/mineral and calcium supplement.
here are some websites on their care

A leopard gecko is an awesome reptile to own. They only need 5 gallons, dont take a lot of work and are known as the most tamest lizards. If you get a baby, you will have to tame it and be able to not get scared if it whips itself around, bites you (no teeth, doesnt hurt) or screams (sounds like a balloon releasing air). I'm 14 and I love them and I can handle it even tho it is still being trained! Mine is only 3 months and I already love it!

There are few reptiles or amphibians that would be happy in a tank that small. However, none like to be held.

You may want to just use it for a small fish tank and then look into a cuddly pet like a pet rat or guinea pig.

Well thats nothing, you can't hold frogs and turtles, lizards and snakes need bigger tanks. A leopard gecko needs a 15 gallon they make great pets and can be handled.

turtles are fairly low-maintence, just feed every week (although they can go months without food), they can handle temperature changes. basically, you'll just have to clean them and the tank every once in a while.
