I myself would visit my local comic shop. They would best be able to suit your needs, especially if you are not quite sure what you are looking for. High Dollar items of interest could be Statues, or CGC graded comics.
If your looking to make an investment type gift. Stick to the classic books that have proven their appeal over the years. An easily affordable one would be Amazing Spider-Man #300 which features the first appearance of Venom. Venom will play a major part in Spider-Man 3 and future Spider-Man movies. As more people know about the character, that comic would rise in value as more people will want Venom items.
One thing to stay away from are any current "hype" books. The new "death" of Captain America issue is a wonderful example. People are paying way too much for this book, it might be slightly hard to find right now ~ BUT ~ Marvel is is a public company with stockholders dedicated to making money. They will public enough comics so that everyone who would want a copy can get at least 5. Marvel wants to promote the STORY, not make collectables.
Marvel's PR campaign for this is pretty good in that EVERYONE is talking about Captain America now, and with the Cap movie currently being made, they will bring him back from his "death" with a lot of hype just in time for the Captain America movie. Sweet!
If your looking for a good story driven comic, and not concerned about value, there are many good books. I would recommend anything written by Brian Michael Bendis.
If all else fails, look on eBay and try to get a good deal on a nice cheap collection or lot.
Good Luck!

The best place would be at a Comicon convention. I don't know when the next one is, but they have almost everything related to comics. Anything from figurines to comics. You'll probably get the best deals there too. It's better than going to a store. The vendors at these conventions are willing to deal.
