yes it is legal to use flexible cpr pipe in the US but, the term is not flexible, its commonly known as soft copper, flex is used at the appliances, and is usually about 2' or less to meet with your shutoff valve.
if you have a well traveled area between the garage and the home, bury it at least 18" and to take it a distance further, I would probably use black pipe 1/2" and just use flex once I've entered the building and after the shutoff valve.

if you're in the US, I believe that it is against code to use flex pipe for anything other than an appliance connection.
black iron is typically used for gas lines, however, there is galvanized available also.
call your local building department and ask them what is code for this.. you may need to transfer a few times, but it's worth it to do it right... remember, this is gas and can be potentially deadly either by explosion or inhalation.

It does meet code in US to use flexible copper tubing. 3/8 will work but if it is a long run (100ft or more) use 1/2.

3/8 inch flexible copper tubing. You will need to have a flaring tool. Make sure you bury it according to your local code.
