99 BMW 528i - 77k - automatic
Complete list of symptoms:

1. rough, uneven start from 0 - 20 mph
2. when slowing down and releasing gas pedal it doesnt seem to go to neutral, it feels like it is in 1st or 2nd gear.
3. transmission fluid looks brownish, not sure if there is burnt smell... some metal dust on the magnet

Some other info:
- one of the ignition coils is misfiring a little (replaced twice -
the same problem)
- intake manifold maybe cracked
- torque converter does not lock up properly at times (50 mph) but that has been like that for years

Otherwise, car is working great, no loss of power, drive on highways all the time, etc.

Brown fluid is not good news, nor metal bits. Your tranny needs replacing. I would imagine they don't give those trannies away.....you may consider trading it in. My friend has a 2000 528 (manual) and it's a fun car to drive.

flush trans. and replace filter. this has to be done at a shop that can completely pump out trans. fluid. will coat about $80. But major problem may be torque converter itself. should take to a transmission specialty shop and get 2-3 estimates to repair. then decide what to do.

It's your components, it needs to be rebuild. I would just find a good used car to buy.
