I am an American "of color", and though I expect hardships everywhere on the planet (people cannot do any better, it seems) it looks like Canada is going to be my best option outside of Europe as a place to permanently settle. I am a professional, like arts and the great outdoors, jazz, and d.i.v.e.r.s.i.t.y. Christian woman, single, under 32. Is Canada an option? I am going to visit Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver soon. (When it gets warm). I am not Caribbean-descended. I am a southern-united states lady, quite old fashioned and somewhat conservative. Do we fare well in Canada? I'd like to check out the above-mentioned cities, but I also greatly desire a Canadian's (or permanent transplant's) opinion on the matter. I am very "artsy" and love folk fests and old places- architecture, literature, history, and anything outdoorsy. I love meeting people. I am multi-lingual as well and enjoy volunteer activities. In your opinion, where would a person like me most like fit? Thanks!

Americans can imigrate to Canada like anyone else. There are also work visas for certain kinds of jobs.
Canada is less racist than the US but you'll still find some. If you're artsy Vancouver might be better for you than Calgary.
Have you been to Calgary? Its cold there in the winter!

It's worth investigating first hand. Calgary is where it's easiest to get a job but hardest to find a decent place to live. Do your math before committing to anything. Calgary and Edmonton are becoming more culturally broad-based all the time as they are the fastest growing and undergo the greatest influx of people from elsewhere.

For the art community, I'd recomment you start with downtown...

...and nearby inner city areas such as Kensington, 17th Avenue SW, Bridgeland and Inglewood.

Keep in mind that it's COLD in Canada, even "when it gets warm."

I can't answer your questions about Canada but as to where you fit in...as you described yourself, one city came overwhelmingly to mind. You're from the south...not sure where, but Asheville, NC seems like a perfect fit for you. An old historic town with LOTS of arts and music and folky type things as well as TONS of outdoor adventures. Waterfalls, hiking, rivers for tubing, mountains for skiing. Close enough to other popular cities for activities (Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte) and a few hours drive from the coast. The best of all worlds here in western NC.
Of course, if your heart is set on Canada, this won't matter. But good luck to you and your search!!

It's not easy getting into canada legally. You've gotta have a job lined up I'd say.

Calgary is full of Rednecks. That might not be the nicest place to settle. Vancouver is wonderful

This place is as good as it gets in terms of discrimination. You can leave this chip on your shoulder at home, you dont need it. just about everybody is from somewhere else around here especially Toronto. While you are here look around for employment and a place to stay. Again, there is no need for this chip on your shoulder
