Most broadband providers deliver their connection using a CAT5 cable with a connector on the end of it that looks like and over-sized phone cable (also called an RJ-45 connector). Basically what you need is a way to connect that cable either directly to your laptop or to a wireless router that would turn their internet connection into a wireless connection your laptop could use.

If you want to go direct to the laptop you will need an Ethernet network card in the laptop. If the computer does not already have it, you will probably need a PCMCIA card which will slide into a socket on one of the sides. They aren't too expensive, and I'll include a link to an example although you should make sure that your laptop has the same PCMCIA slot on it.

If you want to take the connection from your broadband provider and connect it to a wireless router, then you'll need a wireless router. You can buy these at almost any electronics store like BestBuy, CompUSA, Circuit City, ... etc. Some good brand names are Linksys and Netgear. I'll include a link to a sample of that too. Good luck.

Here is how the system works.

Internet -> Internet modem -> Computer

The modem does not provide WiFi. What you need is a broadband WiFi router. The router will broadcast the wireless signal you need to connect your laptop. So your network will look like this

Internet -> Internet Modem -> WiFi Router ~~ Wireless Computer.

Your laptop should already have a network card/port and it should look like this http://www.ust.hk/itsc/classroom/notebook/photo/notebook_network_port.jpg

That being said you should have a network cable to plug into the router to set up the configuration.

Maybe your Internet broadband modem/router does not have wireless, so it can not send out signal for your laptop to receive it.

If you have wireless modem/router. You can buy a usb wireless card for your laptop or a pcmcia wireless network card, this pcmcia card will fit your pcmcia slot.
