I have a wood dining table - cherry finish - and it got a couple of scratches in it the other day. Not real deep but enough that it took off the finish. Is there something I can apply that will help the appearance, fix it or cover up the scratches, something??

Old English furniture polish. It is sold in different tones depending on the darkness of you furniture. Stuff works great.

if the scratch goes into the wood, and you want an original like state again, you need to sand the finish off down to the wood, take a damp cloth and blot the scratch until the scratch is wet, and then take a clothes iron over it. The heat will pull the scratch out. You then need to sand with 180 grit sandpaper until the bump is out of the repair area. then move to 220 or 320 grit sandpaper until the scratches are gone from the repair area. Remember to sand in the direction of the grain. Then simply re finish with a good quality varnish. You Will need to sand the entire table, because cherry darkens over time, and you will have a lighter spot in the area of the repair if you don't. If you don't want to go to these extremes, a color putty or crayon will work.
