Where will SATA technology be in 1 years time? (In terms of speed and performance).

SATA is backwards compatable. A 300 drive will run on a 150 motherboard (with a jumper) and a motherboard that supports 300 should work just fine with a 150 speed drive.
I dont, however, think we're going to be seeing faster speeds than what we have now anytime soon. SATA is already faster than the hard drive itself can read/write data on the platters, so increasing the cable speed again wont speed up performance at all.
Going much faster than we do now is going to require a radical redesign of the hard drive itself, which is probably a couple years away at least.

Sata 300 is backwards compatible with Sata 150.

So if the motherboard supports 300 it will support 150 as well.
