Tie Breaking Procedure
If two or more clubs are tied in points during the regular season, the standing of the clubs is determined in the following order:
1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
Example: if one team plays 40 game and the other 39 and they have the same number of wins, the one with 39 gets the win. That can't happen at the end of the season, everyone plays the same number of games.
2. The greater number of games won.
One team with a record of 10-2-6 and the other with 11-4-4, they would both have the same number of points but the second with 11 wins would be ranked higher.
3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
Say your teams play each other 4 times. One team wins 3 times and the other once. The one that wins 3 times gets it.
4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.
If one team had 200 goals in the season for them and 100 against them. They would have a differential of 100. If another team had 150 goals but only 40 against them, they would have 110 and would be ranked higher.
And it is possible to have the exact same in all of these, just very improbable.

when the season ends and there's more then one team tied for the 8th and final spot they go by:
1- the team that has the most wins. (two teams can finish the season with the same amount of points but one team can have 2 more wins then the other and the other will have more 1 point games.
2- if all let's say 3 teams have a 39 wins 34 loses 9 OTL that would give you 87 PTS for all 3 teams that are tied for 8th place. well then they will give it to the team with the most goals for that would get that final playoff spot.
3- and if they finish with the same record and same wins, loses and OTL and have the same goals for then they go by there games played vs each other in the regular season the one with the most wins advance if still tied then they go by goals for.
hope this helps

Mathematically, I think that is impossible. There is always going to be the very last factor when determining who gets to contend for the cup. For example, two teams might end up with equal amount of points but then they're going to be looking at the way each team has performed; goals allowed, and goals scored eventually will come into the calculation.

It will come down to the two teams record against each other or how many goals they have. It can also be decided by their goals against. They will look for anything that puts one team
ahead.
