Could give you a better answer if knew what area of the country you live in. I was born in KS 66 yrs ago, but have also lived in NV, CO, MO and traveled to both coasts as well as North & South borders.
The eastern half of KS is very hilly with lots of water; cold in the winter, hot in the summer, mostly. The western half is so flat and pretty dry that to drive the interstates, you have to watch the sky for entertainment--on a cloudy day, it's quite beautiful actually. Your neck can get stiff tho. ha
The eastern half where I've lived the last 35 yrs has many interesting things to do. The people are very friendly, schools for all ages are good-great, churches galore, and the attitudes range extremely conservative to very liberal. In other words, there is mostly a 'niche' for everyone in the larger cities. Small towns are much like most with everyone knowing your business whether it's right or wrong but usually in a friendly way. I say usually because some of these small places have many biased attitudes. Not all of them, tho.
The university towns (Manhattan and Lawrence) are extremely liberal--I grew up in Manhattan. Culture and education are very much at the top of the list there, and when you add Ft Riley into the mix, it's even more interesting. Housing has always been at a premium at midwest prices with students and military. One does need to have a car in this state--no matter where you live or visit.
Living costs generally are lower than either coast altho seems to me we are trying to catch up--which is a minus to me. Maybe the coasts have risen even more tho; don't honestly know. Salaries are likewise--the US gov't pays less to their employees than CO, for example. Today, gas is $2.36/gal, if that helps. You know that can change. Job openings depend on what your training is, etc. We've had an avg unemployment rate according to the statistics--which I don't honestly trust much. It is certainly better than cities hit by the car company layoffs tho.
We have lots of grass, trees, hills, flowers and open spaces--and I live in KC. Some people even have gardens.
Crime is high in KC,MO & parts of KS--most of KS is relatively safe tho.
Have run out for now. Hope this helps.

well i'm a 100% jayhawker and the brs ain't know crap. They just jealous coz we won the border war. Get over it. Kansas is awesome we've lots of history and mainly in the western part we're agri. The bigger cities are witchita, topeka and kc. The smaller towns just depends some are strict some aren't in GC they more worried about gangs than anything. True that smaller towns such as dodge and garden and liberal and great bend don't have a lot to do. But then again neither does kc. Lawrence is a party town it's where KU is so yup.

Depending on what town your in Kansas can be nice. Kansas City KS, or Lawrence KS are really beutiful 9 months a year.

Low cost of living, lakes, and a very relaxing laid back deminor. Average people seem to be a little smarter than most places I've visited, which is really nice when your there for a long time.

If you are in one of the smaller cities around the state it can be awful boring. Very strict law inforcement as well. You can easily get a ticket for jaywalking or not using your blinker in the smaller towns. Which gets annoying pretty quick.

Well I am a 100% Missouri fan so I can honestly say I dislike Kansas. Lawrence is a very nice area though. Mass street is the place to be; it is very diverse. One block you can shop at the Buckle and the next block a "hippie" shop! There are many nice shops and restaurants there. There are a few really nice lakes to get out and relax on. I don't know what your career path is but i will say as spread out as everything is it would be important to settle in place where all your families most important needs can be easily met. Taxes are cheap there at least. Western Kansas is a total bore, at least your close to Colorado and ski vacations are a blast. The Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri is an awesome vacation spot if you have off weekends. Airports are very spread out. Hospitals are spread out. Overall it is a very plain but yet relaxing area if you are wanting to just settle down. Overland Park Kansas is where I would move to, it is very large and growing very fast. The area itself is good investment for property and the malls and schools are great. There isn't many rough neighborhoods there if you know what I mean.

If you've got a family and want to settle down, it's a great idea. Cost of living is really low compared to elsewhere and you'll find more distribution-related jobs here (since it's in the center of the country).

Not much to do, though, so if you like nightlife, culture, etc. this is not the place to be. Kansas City, MO is getting better, but doesn't compare to the coasts.

Advantages: relatively low cost of living; Johnson County has one of the highest per capita incomes in the US; good schools; low crime.

Disadvantages: boring; a long way from everywhere else except other boring places like Nebraska and Oklahoma; cold in the winter, hot in the summer and in the middle of Tornado Alley (make sure if you do move here you've got a house with a basement!); bizarre drinking laws; too many religious fanatics; food sucks.

Advantages in KS are low crime, friendly people, and good schools.

Disadvantages are the dating scene sucks, the night life is a bore unless you go over to Missouri and a lot of judgemental people.

LOL at the person who described Witchita Kansas...yep, pretty much.

Advantage: No one will ever come to spend their vacations at your home.

Disadvantage: It's crawling with unemployed, aging munchkins.
