A word count is the number of words in a particular piece of writing. So if the word count in an essay is 500 words the essay is 500 words long. Your word processing software should let you find the word count of a document. In MS Word it is under "tools".

well, from my training with typing way back when...

a 'word' was considered to be every 5 letters

so, for a 100 word count, you would need 500 letters worth of writing.

alternatively it could refer to Microsoft Word ... u can type in an entire essay/paragraph then click on "TOOLS" then "WORD COUNT" and it will tabulate how many words you've typed.
