whirlpool, middle of the product line. this way you dont get the basic model and you avoid the expensive bells and whistles that you will never use on the top of the line.

My entire family is a Maytag family. When the washers and dryers last for 25-30 years on average in your family without having to repair them, that's pretty good. I've had my Maytag washer and dryer set for 3 years and not a single problem. I got mine at Lowe's. Lowe's seems to have the best prices on appliances that I found. Maytag has two main types, the higher end line that look real nice (the Cadillac) and have so many settings that I don't think you'll ever figure out what they'll all do and then lower there is the lower end line (the Chevy) that is pretty much plane jane white that look nice and don't have so many settings.
I went with the lower end line, but I bought the best model of the lower end line. My mom talked me into some of the extra options from experience. The washer and dryer were their house-warming gift for me. I agree with her on the options she suggested. And those are:
- the Intelli-dry feature - It lowers the heat when it reaches the end of the drying cycle so you aren't as susceptible to static or wrinkles
- the chime on the dryer - lets you know when the clothes are done
- the extended tumble on the dryer to keep the clothes tumbling when the dryer is done so they don't wrinkle if you can't get to the dryer right away
I can't remember the differences on the washers. But I do remember it had the most options of the low end line.

There are so many options to buying a washer and dryer these days! It's pretty amazing because I stop and wonder if they don't all do the same thing and even the cheap ones should do a fairly admirable job? But obviously the new high end ones do the dishes and scrub the sink (tongue in cheek). But there is always good old Consumer Guide for ratings on reliability and such. I suggest you go to a library and find the one for washers and dryers to see what they say.

I need a commercial size for the amount of laundry that I do.lol
However, I can not complian about my washer and dryer set. It does about 4 to 5 loads each a day. (That's a lot of laundry each year.)
I purchased mine a couple of years ago. I don't know what model they are but they are Whirlpools. The washing machine is top loading and the dryer loads in the front.
I think that Whirlpool is a really reliable brand. My old washer and dryer were whirlpools. They were old when I got them, the only reason I don't still have them, is that I moved, and they were way too heavy to move by myself.

I can't really advise you on the new fangled agitatorless top loading models or front loading models because I've never had one.
However, as far as standard traditional top loading washers go (the ones that have the agitator post in the middle of the tub) I have had very good luck with Kenmore and Whirlpool brands. These will last about 10 to 16 years before they break.
Also since traditional technology top loaders are no longer belt driven, they have a direct drive transmission, they're now more reliable than expected.

I recommend the WHIRPOOL DUET. Oh my gosh I'm so glad you asked this. We have had so many washer dryer problems; we have lots of laundry and we work at home on the computer so it is a huge issue. We even had one after we bought this house where the dryer caught on fire and the washing machine flooded the whole kit/liv room TWICE. We finally went out and bought the Whirlpool Duet http://www.mikeswasherdryer.com/Logos%2001-16-05/Whirlpool%20Duet%20-%20White%20Set%2007-11-05%20pic2.jpg and seriously we could not be happier. We've had it now over a year and it is best. And yes it is the highes rated consistently. We bit the bullet and got it at Lowes and charged it and said YES! We got the Duet as I said but the kind that STACKs. It is quiet, efficient, dries FAST and well it is just the best.

I have the Kenmore HE4T front loading washer and dryer. I wouldn't trade the for the world. They always do a great job. The washer hardly used any water (obviously enough though) so therefore less soap is used, and it spins the clother almost dry, so the dryer costs go down too!

We just got the LG High Efficiency front loading washer and dryer and they are AWESOME!
The washer has so many different settings from steam to delicate and anything in between...steam is great for freshening up clothes...I hate ironing so this does the trick before work!
We had older GE ones before and my clothes never got clean, but with these I hardly ever have to use stain remover.
I never thought I'd get so excited over an appliance, but these are totally great...

Maytag is the best washer and dryer that was ever built, in fact at onetime it was the Cadillac of washers before dryers ever came out. I have the duet pair of Maytag and they are the best in my books. I wouldn't ever buy any other Brand fact I have all my appliances Maytag Dishwasher, Self cleaning oven , my microwave, counter top. They can't be beat.

i'm fairly happy with mine! I also have a Maytag Neptune washing gadget and that i purely have been given a GE stainless-metallic Drum electric powered dryer. I in many situations don't get too worked up some dryer yet this one i in my opinion like! It certainly handles the large plenty that the Neptune can wash! it somewhat is in all probability the biggest element, ensure the dryer is as massive simply by fact the washing gadget!

I am very happy with mine, I have had the same set for 7 years now. I suggest a Kenmore 80 series set at sears.
I have never had to do a repair on them yet. I do about 7 loads a week.
