sophmore means 2nd year, sophmore albums have curses on them if the freshmen album did well.

A band's first album will often be referred to as their debut album, and their second album is called their sophmore album. The term, sophmore, is often used when referring to second year college students, or the secend year for a professional athelete, and many other activities. It has only recently being used for second albums for musicians.

It's similar to how your 2nd year in highschool is your "sophomore" year. As far as where the actual term comes from I'm not exactly sure.
