My 16 yr old daughter is attending the Jr. prom this year. She is a great kid but not traditional at all....and I absolutely love her for that! She wants to make her own gown and we are looking for any and all suggestions. Does anyone have any ideas or websites that we can look at or into? She is not a "girlie girl" and thus would be mortified in a pink, flouncy-type gown. Can anyone help us to jump start this project with ideas or suggestions? (The electrical tape/duct tape gown idea is not an option....she wants something even more cutting edge). Thank you all in advance for your time and any ideas....

Hi! I'm a designer, and have done several dresses so don't worry about my ideas being unfeasable. Making your own gown is a brilliant idea, but unless you are both very good seamstresses, it will be a lot of hard work! I would suggest assymetrical, two contrasting colours, some sharp materials- one satin type and one cotton or velvet. Metallics are brilliant for something extreme. I can suggest fabrics, and cuts.

If you want me to draw up some designs for dresses and send you the pictures I draw up then you can email me at missytetra@yahoo.co.uk and we can discuss further what she needs (a picture of her could help to draw up something suitable). I can also draft up some ideas of the patterns you'll need too. I love to work with people who want something completely original and nouveux! Even if it's just a little bit different to the usual gowns, it would be brilliant. Also I can advise which fabrics are okay to work with.

Good luck anyway ^_^ lovies!!

Hello there, proud mama.......lemme see if this is something your daughter would want. Most everyone would be in satin and lace (as to be expected), so how about denim and leather for her? Picture this:
Skirt - soft denim material floor length A-line cut BUT uneven hemline - not scalloped (too girly), more like wedges for a geometrical look - glue mirror/glass studs all around the edges of the uneven hemline - don't go for order; instead place those studs 2 rows there, 3 rows there, whatever....but keep it near the edges - you'd want to emphasize that uneven look! Stay with mirror or clear studs (don't go for colors).
Tops - if she already has a black leather vest (the inexpensive kind), perfect! Glue more of those mirror studs - anywhere and everywhere BUT only on the front...stay away from making any kind of pattern...go for the chaotic look! Keep the back plain and unadorned.
Shoes - Wear black ankle-length boots, with heels
Hair-do - Just this once, would you allow her to wear it short and spikey??? Highlights would be nice too.
Jewelry - go for white...anything white (like puka shells necklace, bracelets, etc.) ---- go overboard! Don't go for just one strand ----- go for more...use different lengths - but all white!
Now, she's all set to strut to the dance floor, uniquely herself!

Have fun!
