my front garden doesn't get much sun, we had new turf laid last year and it hasn't taken very well, any ideas?

I would suggest that this is an ideal place for a Japanese rock garden, by putting a membrane down it will allow the water to seep through, but not allow the weeds to grow by using half a dozen Japanese azaleas, some large rocks which can be seen as islands with the azaleas placed next to them, with large pebbles around the rocks and smaller pebbles around the first ones working down to pea shingle you will save loads of time as this type of gardening only needs the use of a rake

If you really want grass you will have to have better drainage. One way to do this without digging up the whole yard is: at the bottom of the yard (whichever end/side is lower) dig a trench 3-4 ' deep and layer it with 1' of gravel. Then fill it in with the dirt. If you find alot of clay, you may have a larger problem than you want to deal with and then the idea of a rock garden is lovely. The moss would add to it!

when they laid new turf did they do any soil prep underneath it . . . I would go to a local garden store and explain it there could be some kind of treatment or fertilizer thats good for your lawn(there are some good grasses that do just fine in the shade) some reseeding of grass might have to happen to check out good all purpose grass seed like kentucky blue grass!
