Definitely.
When you look at the Goals for and against for all the playoff-bound teams in the West they look almost identical!
Not so in the East. Once you get past the first 4 or 5, the playoff-bound teams have given up a lot of goals, some of them MORE than goals that they scored. It's not IMPOSSIBLE for a team that has given up more Goals than they scored to win the Cup, but I believe it has NOT happened since the initial expansion in 1967.
I would not be surprised if Buffalo or New Jersey wins it all, they are both very good teams andwill probably find it easier to GET to the finals. But your question (which I think a few people are missing here) was which CONFERENCE was better.
No doubt in my mind, the West.

Well the fact that Dallas has clinched a playoff spot with 20+ games left is a good example. Teams in the East that are 5+ games under .500 still have a shot at making the playoffs while that wouldn't fly in the Western Conference. Although this year, the bottom tier teams in the Western Conference are "Eastern Conference bad".

they don't have the Competition as the Eastern Conference so yes, If the Penguins Move West of Pittsburgh you add them too to spice up the Western Conference.
Colorado Avalance they only team the in the Hunt for the Playoffs and Not in the Top 8 in the western Conference, Amazing isn't.

well just look at the last 2 Stanley cup winners and i believe at the time the Red Wings won the Presidents trophy and lost in the first round. the Eastern Conference is much faster and more hitting then there is in the Western Conference and that's why with that speed and the more physical side they dominate in the playoffs. East is the better Conference out of the 2.

Take a Look at the Last 3 Cups: New Jersey, Tampa Bay and Carolina. They are all eastern and made the league more exciting so east dominates all. the reason the West have the higher numbers is because it isnt much of a challenge for the strong teams!!!!! Devils Rule!!!!!

honestly this could be a very hard question to answer. hell the west always has more points, even last year i thought they had more teams that were better. the east's argument right now will be we won the cups the last two years. but honestly that is what is wrong in my opinion of the scheduling, we really wont ever know, because the east dont see the west enough.

The western conference has more grit, whereas the east has speed. Overall I'm going to say that speed trumps grit.

I just read some insanely written and rambled article about the Western Conference being better than the Eastern. Now you can say yes or no it can be debated depending on your team of preference or where you are located but putting all that aside this is what really grabbed my attention and made me ask WTF was this tweeker talking about! The statement was that the 2 West Coast teams have poor goaltenders that are just above the level of minor league play or just below it! Now you can look at every stat for pre and post season but playoff hockey is a different animal and seriously calling Johnathan Quick and Henrik Lundqvist fair goalies is like saying Wayne Gertzsky or Mario Lamuex were ok players that had a good day now and again. The amazing thing about Hockey is that (and I have seen this for myself) a team can be down 1 to 5 with just over 6 minuets left and come back to win 6 to 5! THATS PLAY OFF HOCKEY!

The west always seems to have a higher number of more talented teams not always the top, or best individual players, but more complete squads.
