Because they haven't played the same number of games. A team with the record of 34-15 would be a half a game ahead of a team with the record of 34-16. The first has lost one less game than the second team, but they both have won the same number of games, advantage goes to the team with the least amount of losses. It basically boils down to winning percentages.

If the teams have played different amounts of games for example the first place team is 50-35 and the second place team is 50-34. The second place team isn't a whole game behind so they say they are a half game back. It will even out at the end of the season.

Each game is worth half a game. It takes two individual games to equal one. It's sort of a " I'll meet you halfway deal". Throughout the season you'll see wins and loses come down to percentage points.Remember baseball has the most games to be played of any sport, this helps to correctly determine winning and losing percentage, since sometimes games are not played or made up (rare, but does happen). The leagues are able to determine whether games must, should, or can be not played due to percentage points. If you have been watching overe the last few years you would have seen this. Teams 'clinch' due to mathematical winning or losing. If you and I were in a race, ran neck and neck, whoever wins wins by a certain amount. This for the further establishing of records, time or otherwise, depending on sport. HR's, RBI's, hitting percentage, batting percentage, etc.

The half marks an inconsistency in number of games played. If one team has played one or more games at any particular point in the season, the 1/2 game acknowledges that gap between the number of decisions. Of course, by the end of the season, there will be no more 1/2's as every team will have played the same number of games.

1/2 video games are used even as communities don't have an identical volume of video games performed. as an party team A playd 20 video games and gained 15 and team B performed 19 video games and gained 15. hence B is a million/2 in the front because they can get 16 wins in 20 video games or in the journey that they loose they are going to be tied at 15. @SevenDayTheory on your party team 2 could be a million/2 activity ahead.

Lets pretend team one has played 10 games and team two has only played 9 games. Team one has 10 wins and team two has 9 wins. Team two is only a half game behind because they haven't played 10 games yet.
