Many sperm die as soon as they enter the vagina. Actually, the vagina is not an ideal environment for sperm. It is very acidic. Maybe that is why a man releases so many sperm. This increases the odds that at least one will reach it's intended destination. However, some sperm still survive this treacherous journey. As the days go by, more and more sperm die off. Some may die one or two days after they enter the vagina, some may survive up to five days. But if fertilization never occurs, they all have the same fate, which is to die inside the vagina.

Sperms usually die within minutes in the vagina. And most sperms die within one to two days inside the cervix and uterus. But a few sperms can survive for up to five days inside the uterus.
