I went to Dauphin (Ithink thats the correct spelling) Island Alabama when I was a little boy but I can't remember it that well. Are there any other places on the gulf in the U.S. that could be an excellent mini vacation spot?

As the Tropics do not begin until the Tropic of Cancer there is no mainland American location actually "tropical" and certainly not an Alabama island, which rarely but definitely suffers a frost.

The subtropical locations south of Miami and the Florida keys would come closest.

The only actual tropical lands on the Gulf of Mexico would be
in northwestern Cuba.

Corpus Christi has Padre Island...it's beautiful...Galveston Island near Houston is ok...lots of rental properties, by the week, are available at both...High Island by ferry from Galveston is also very nice and more secluded...hope this helps...
