There is an answer to your question. It may be rather long. I'll speak of it in a general manner, easy to understand. There is a more comprehensive answer at http://360.yahoo.com/noddarc "What is a Graviton" and "Magnetism and Gravity" may be of interest. If you click on "list view" then you can scroll down to either of these.
First, the answer lies in the physics trilogy, which is a general explanation of why our universe exists as it does. The trilogy is: E = mc2, m = E/c2, and c2 = E/m. The last describes a field of physical time or a gravity field. The "c2" value describes the basis of our existence. It is what all mass and energy are composed of. It is the reason why there exists such a concept as "time" itself, and shows how quickly the present folds into becoming that of the past. This value also says that there is no manner for us, who can only exist in present time, to interact with either the past or future. All things in present time are sealed here and cannot escape it.
The reason for going through the above is to show the conceptual value of what you seek. It is the basis of everything we know, and because it is so small in value, is very difficult to isolate other than by comparison judgement.
I am going to compare a single mass in two different locations in order to gain understanding of what a graviton is. It will be a cubic foot of mass. In the first instance it will be moving through space at a speed of light minus 25 mps (miles per second). In the second location the identical mass will be within our planet at a distance of 0.717 miles from the very center of it.
These two masses will be identical in physical shape, though in two different locations. The one in outer space will appear to an observer (were it able to be seen at a right angle to direction of travel) as a practically invisible line. The same would be true of the same mass within our planet at the 0.717 mile location from the core point. The one in outer space changes shape because the frequency in direction of travel causes the mass to change shape according to the E = hf concept. The one in our planet would have the same physical shape due to the intensity of gravitational lines accelerating the mass toward the speed of light. The mass in outer space could be exchanged with the one in our planet and there would be no disruption in doing so. The mass within our planet at the 0.717 mile location could be released in outer space and it would instantly be moving at the speed of light minus 25 mps.
What we need to know now is Why it is that the graviton forms in our planet, and particular in a single atom, of which zillions of them form a cubic foot of mass. Notice that in either of the places where the mass existed, there was a visual, physical change within the mass. The mass in outer space changes its value (shape/energy) in time. The mass in our planet changes TIME VALUE by means of energy divided by the mass it is part of. It is this time value we are interested in. This is what forms the graviton.
Because mass is composed of electromagnetic energy, this value must exist in some manner as having the same value at all times. When a mass has zero movement, energy is free to move in all directions at the speed of "c" (light). When a mass moves toward the speed of light, energy in form of "c" can only move at right angles by a value that decreases according to the direction of movement. (Example: were a mass to move at the speed of light, minus 25 mps, energy could only move at right angles to direction of travel at a speed of no greater that 25 mps, whereas were at rest it could move at the speed of light). Notice how energy in form of "c" changes mass value. The same happens in a mass 0.717 miles from the center of our planet. The value of "c" can exist only in the direction of travel (toward the center of our planet). In order for the value of "c" to exist, the value of "E" as found in c2 = E/m moves in the direction of earth's core as waves. These waves appear to be that of "h" (very small value). All these waves below the Mohorivic Discontinuity move through the mass of our planet, going through its center, drawing the heat energy toward the core as well as the mass, then pass out through the other side. It is for this reason that our planet is round as well as having a cool crust.

There are four fundamental forces in nature:
Electromagnetic force
Strong nuclear force
Weak nuclear force
Gravity [the wimp of the lot]
Gravity is a result of large amounts of matter causing curvature of spacetime which forms a gravity well. Read some about Einstein's general theory of relativity. No need to do an in-depth study, just a nice cursory read over will explain lots.
Gravity is in the realm of "Newtonian" or "classical" or "Einsteinian" physics.
The realm of the parts that make up atoms and the particles that make up those parts is quantum physics. Electrons are negatively charged, protons are positively charged. Like charges attract. This keeps the electrons from just flying away from the nucleus of their respective atoms. This is the electromagnetic force. Also, part it due to the Weak nuclear force. These two forces have been somewhat combined in a thing called the Electro-Weak Theory.
Now, opposites attract and like charges repel. So, what keeps the like charged protons in a nucleus from repelling each other? The strong nuclear force of the neutrons that reside in the nucleus with the protons [except for hydrogen].
Variations/extrapolations of these forces also control things like quarks which make up the electrons, protons and neutrons. The new Hadron collider at CERN in Switzerland will hopefully provide lots more cool information on just what weird stuff goes on at the sub-atomic level.
Oh, and to show how weak gravity is compared to even the electromagnetic force just go watch an electromagnet at some industrial salvage yard pick up huge amounts of metal parts right off the ground out of gravity's feeble clutches.

Well, the nucleus is at the centre of an atom, and contains most of its mass so it does do some gravitational pulling on the electrons whizzing around it. However it is also electrically charged, and the strength of the attraction due to this charge is much, much, much greater than the effect of gravity.
This isn't true for the earth as a whole because the atoms the earth is made of are electrically neutral (the positive and negative charges cancel out), so if you have enough of these atoms the weak gravity force starts to exert a huge pull.

Gravity isn't actually a pull inside of the Earth. Gravity is an intrinsic property of mass. All things with mass have a gravitational field. The pull of gravity in the direction of the center of mass of the Earth is the cumulative effect of the pull of gravity of every single atom below you.
Within molecules, atoms still have a gravitational pull, however, gravity is considered to be a weak force. It holds us to the ground but we can lift our foot off of it. There are much stronger forces within atoms that hold them together.
An atom is composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons, all of which have mass. Again, the gravitational force due to each particle is incredibly weak compared to the sub atomic forces that hold the atom together.

It's not something in the structure of the atom, if it were all neutrons for instance, there would still be gravity. Any mass imparts gravity
To be honest we don't know what causes gravity, some scientists think there is a particle galled a graviton, others think gravity is a warping of the "fabric" of space-time that pulls things together. We just don't know yet.
