That's our peak Fall Foliage season here, so prices go up accordingly.

Your prices are also going to vary greatly depending on the region you want to visit. Burlington will be high - as will Stowe.

You may find lower prices in St. Albans (there is a Days Inn there) or in Colchester there are a few places that may be a little lower.

Your best bet is to use an online hotel reservation site (hotels.com, expedia.com, orbitz.com, resideo.com, etc.). Specify your dates & location and sort the results by price -- that way, you'll be able to focus on the results that matter more.
