I have a 37 gallon freshwater tank. I'd like to put colorful fish in that are community fish. I'm not interested in breeding, just enjoying. I like tetra's but I'm not sure what else would be good.

How abooout a school of cardinal tetras (10 of them), and a couple dwarf gouramis? Dwarfs come in blue, blue and red, firey red, and honey - you could get one of each - OR a pair of pearl gouramis (IMO the prettiest gouramis, but bigger), or a few angelfish, too.
Complement that with a few cherry barbs and maybe some oto cats or cory cats.

Male Guppies are usually pretty. (Usually the females aren't as colorful.) I agree with you that Tetras are very cool, but they need to be in schools, so I would suggest buying five or so. I also like Cory Catfish. (They aren't very colorful, but they are really neat!) Especially Spotted Cory Catfish. By the way, Guppies and Tetras and Cory Catfish all get along, so they can be in the same tank.

maybe goldfish or kissyfish... BUT, whatever you do don't buy them at Wal-Mart!!! buy them at Petco! i had wal-mart fish and they died in 1-4 days of having them! And i had one fish that was from Petco and after we had it for over 4 months, we released it into a catfish farm down the road from us so they could breed it with other catfish. :-)
