Aside from linking to a file. You can change the output of your code to a particular document type:

'word document
Response.ContentType ="application/msword"

'excel document
Response.ContentType ="application/x-excel"

Place the code above before doing a Response.Write or any output.

If you upload a Word or Excel document to the web and link directly to it, it should display if the person has Microsoft Office or OpenOffice installed.
